Chi Nei Tsang: when the belly releases emotions
In Taoist tradition, the belly is considered the second brain — long before Western science confirmed the existence of the gut-brain axis. Chi Nei Tsang, literally "transformation of the internal organs' energy", is a deep abdominal massage that works on both the physical and emotional plane.
The belly, reservoir of emotions
We store in our abdomen far more than the food we digest. Anger, fear, grief, anxiety — all these emotions, when unexpressed or unprocessed, create tensions in the internal organs and abdominal tissues.
A knot in the stomach before a stressful event. Digestive cramps during periods of overwork. Disrupted transit after an emotional shock. The link between emotions and belly is daily, yet rarely addressed holistically.
How a session unfolds
Chi Nei Tsang is practised lying down, belly uncovered. The practitioner works with gentle yet deep pressure across the entire abdomen — liver, stomach, intestines, diaphragm. Each organ is approached with a specific intention.
The session lasts approximately one hour. It is common to feel emotions rising — this is a sign that the body is releasing what it was holding. Some people describe a feeling of deep lightness after the session, as if an invisible weight had been lifted.
The belly is the body's memory. When we free it, we free far more than digestion.
Observed benefits
- Improved digestion — Bloating, transit, acidity: Chi Nei Tsang acts directly on these discomforts.
- Stress reduction — By releasing abdominal tensions, the parasympathetic nervous system activates. The body enters repair mode.
- Emotional release — Buried emotions may surface and dissolve. It is a gentle, accompanied process.
- Better posture — A freed diaphragm improves breathing and influences the entire postural chain.
